I think similar stuff happened with other failed experiments like L4D2 and the HL2 episodes. What people really liked about Portal 2 was mostly stuff Valve had already done before. Its experimental additions were mostly failures: Gels, laser cubes and light bridges didn't turn out to be a big game changer, everyone was happy to quickly forget about the co-op hats, and the level editor was kind of a flash in the pan from what I've heard. If you're a mad scientist and just care about experiments, Portal 2 was kind of a dead end. I'm not sure where CSGO fits into all this, the early stages of development seemed pretty half-hearted and right now it seems to mainly serve as a testing ground for minor economy experiments. I think they may have wanted to make a hardware-based guinea pig happen (considering Steam Universe and VR), but that didn't really shake out, so we're still stuck with Dota. First it was Half-Life, then TF2, then Dota. They'll pick a guinea pig, perform all the experiments that they can on it, and then move on to the next. Hmm, so the way I view this is that Valve is something of a mad scientist.
